Cover Up; Police District Command Accused

The persistent refusal of the Akyem Oda Division of Ghana Police Service to prosecute a self-styled chief, Thompson Eric Tano of Akyem Adausina Royal Stool under the stool name, Nana Boni Abankro V, and his accomplice, one Mr. Minta who allegedly shot Opanyin Kofi Ntoa Fie has heightened tension in the area. The failure of the police officers at Akyem Oda and Abirim to investigate and prosecute the two suspects according to the family members, is an indictment on the police service. In a petition dated August Monday 18, 2014 and filed at the Eastern Regional Police Command, the Abusuapanyin of the Nana Foriwaa lineage of the Akyem Adausina Royal Stool, Mr. Solomon Kenneth Ntiamoah stated that, on July 25, 2012, the Divisional Command came to Akyem Adausina, with a list of names that were alleged to have assaulted Thompson Eric Tano. The self-styled chief, according to the head of Akyem Adausina family, before the demise of the traditionally enstooled chief, the late Nana Ntiamoah Bediako IV in February 24th, 2013 had been challenging his authority as a chief. The list, he said included one Kwabena Frimpong, who according to him had not even visited the community for over two months. Another suspect on the list, Bismark Asiedu Kyei, he said was also on an errand to Hweakwae, a nearby community. Explaining the content of his petition, Mr. Ntiamoah said since 2015, Thompson Eric Tano engaged the then sitting chief in a long time chieftaincy dispute. The case, he went to say, finally ended up at the Supreme Court for adjudication which he stated the Supreme Court ruled in favour of the late chief in July 17th 2012. as would be expected in every circumstances of life, family members gathered in our grandfathers house (Opanyin Kofi Ntoa Fie) on the 22nd of July 2012, to celebrate the Supreme Court case that went in our favour he said. Whilst in the house of Opanyin Kofi Ntoa Fie, he recounted, Thompson Eric Tano, came over from his house opposite to Opanyin Kofi Ntoa Fie, with one Mr. Minta in his company, armed with a gun, and in the broad daylight started firing in the Opanyin Kofi Ntoa House. Mr. Minta slapped my nephew, Joes face and when my nephew was about to fall, he stepped on a broken bottle which wounded him. The bottles and the glasses were smashed by Thompson Eric Tano the head of Akyem Adausina family said. He also indicated that Thompson slapped his face while he was standing near a pillar and fell on the ground, in the presence of the police men who were on guard duty at the house of Opanyin Kofi Ntoa Fie, where the stool regalia and Nana Bediakos personal property were being kept. The matter according to the Abusuapanyin was reported to the New Abirim police, but no arrest was made. Ironically, he said he and his people were charged and put before the Akyem Swedru Circuit Court. The action of the police he noted urged him to file the petition at Eastern regional Police Command to demand more explanations. But he said their caution statement was not taken let alone the case being investigated.
