Ghana Eats More Fish Than It Produces

Although Ghana consumes about 950, 000 tonnes of fish annually, only 450 000 are caught or cultivated locally, Madam Sherry Ayitey, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, has said. She said only foreigners were engaged in large scale fish farming and urged Ghanaians to go into aquaculture to boost local fish production. Madam Ayitey and Mrs Benita Sena Okity-Duah, the Deputy Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, had visited Raanan Fish Feed West Africa Limited in Prampram. She said the government was prepared to provide financial and training support to individuals and companies who would go into aquaculture and added that the government was establishing the Anomabo Fisheries College in the Central Region to train more people in fish cultivation. She called on tertiary institutions to collaborate with government to establish aquaculture departments in their units to train the youth.
