Caterers Threaten To Withdraw Services

Caterers for the Ghana School Feeding Programme (GSFP) in parts of the Greater Accra, Volta and Eastern regions have decided not to cook for pupils when school re-opens next week due to governments indebtedness. They told The Finder on condition of anonymity that government owes caterers nationwide about GH₵110 million, being money owed them for one year. According to them, their decision to suspend provision of food for pupils when school resumes follows several unfulfilled promises. The Finder interacted with caterers from Ashaiman, Tema, Ada East and West in the Greater Accra Region as well as caterers at Odumase-Krobo in the Lower Manya Municipality of the Eastern Region and others in parts of the Volta Region. The caterers said officials constantly use challenges facing the economy as an excuse for not paying them. One of the co-ordinators of the School Feeding Programme in Ashaiman told The Finder on condition of anonymity that she and her colleague co-ordinators have also not been paid for months. She said most of them have been patient with the authorities and consistently appeal to caterers to be hopeful, saying: But for four months now, how do we expect our workers to live and support their husbands and childrens welfare? She warned, Our children will live miserably should our monies not be paid us before school resumes because we dont know how and where to get money to buy food items rich in nutritional values to cook nutritious food for them.
