Free Food For 55,000 Pupils

THE CHIEF Executive Officer of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije has stated that for this academic year, the Assembly will be feeding 55,000 children under the school feeding programme. Mr. Vanderpuije said the Assembly is taking this number to help more children stay in school for the academic year. The AMA Boss said this when he visited some schools within the metropolis and also donated some educational materials to them. Mr. Vanderpuije visited some selected schools within the Greater Accra Region to inspect the schools as well as welcome the Kindergarten pupils who are in school for the very first time in their lives. According to the AMA Boss, �we need each child well educated to acquire knowledge and skills to perform in the structure of governance within the society we belong.� The Mayor's first port of call was the Nii Odartey Lamptey Basic and Junior High School opposite the Baiden Powell Memorial Hall in Accra. He donated educational materials to the children including exercise books, pencils and erasers for beginners in class one as a form of assistance and motivation to show government's commitment and support in assuring them of quality education. The Second port of call was the Abadraka Gray Kindergarten School where the children welcomed Mr. Vanderpuije with the recitals of Bible verses and a drama on trading in an open market. Mr. Vanderpuije, as part of the visits, educated the children on the need to wash their hands well enough before they eat to prevent any form of sickness, especially on the cases of cholera which is on the ascendency. He further entreated the teachers and heads of the various schools to monitor and ensure that hygienic and quality food is sold by vendors within the school premises to avoid any danger on the lives of these young once. Chorkor KG/ Mamprobi Site 4 in the Ablekuma South Constituency was the third place of call on the mayors itinerary where he further echoed the need for clean environment and good hygiene. He added that there was the need to provide new classroom accommodation for the children to upgrade their learning environment and conditions of study and therefore promised to construct one of the Millennium School Structures on the compound to reduce the pressure on the school. Mr. Vanderpuije also interacted with the children and assured them of good benefits of education and urged them to be more committed to their books and become useful citizens in the future. At the Da Awatul Islamic School, the Mayor promised to demolish the existing classroom structure and replaced it with one of the Millennium City Schools.
