The governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) has called off its scheduled primaries in the Madina Constituency after Chairperson of the party in that area, Rejoice Ahiable, filed a complaint with the police asking them to halt the process.
�I had to go and show the injunction to the police and to the EC and when they saw it they realised it was going to be contempt of court� to proceed with the election, she told journalists.
According to her, the police did not face any resistance from any members of the community when they arrived to terminate the election.
Electoral Commission officials who were also alerted about the injunction refused to turn up to supervise the election.
Acting Secretary of the constituency, Mawuli Gzapkasu, confirmed the elections did not take place due to the Chairperson�s intervention.
Leadership of the party had ordered the regional executives to go ahead with the election despite an injunction restraining them.
Deputy General Secretary in charge of Operations, George Lawson, said the party leadership had consulted with their lawyers and were advised they could proceed with the ballot.
He said it surprised him that the vote was cancelled but assured the leadership would regroup to hear the contending parties.
Greater Accra Regional Chairman, Ade Coker had indicated the Madina Constituency election was going on smoothly. That has turned out to be incorrect.
In a related development, Mr. Lawson said a member of the party in the Ashanti Region who has secured an injunction on the party's regional elections did so out of naivety.
He said NDC's constitution allows the National Executive Committee to extend the mandate of regional officers of the party - something he said was unknown to the plaintiff and which formed the basis of his suit.
He insists the party will get the injunction set aside to pave way for its regional elections.
