Small Businesses Schooled On Procurement Practices In The Oil Sector

Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) operating in the Oil and gas sector are undergoing a four-day intensive training on procurement procedures in the oil and gas industry to build their capacity in applying for contracts. The workshop would also expose them to international best practices when it comes to procurement and contract in the upstream oil business. Mr. Augustine Botchway, Deputy Chief of Party of the Ghana Supply Chain Programme, said a gap analysis conducted by the program showed that Ghanaian businesses lacked the requisite skills and negotiation powers to enable them win big contracts in the oil and gas industry. The Ghana Supply Chain Program is a USAID funded project to build the capacity of local businesses to fully participate in the oil and other related business. He said there was the need for companies to form synergies and acquire the relevant skills to make them competitive in the upstream business. Mr. Ken Mcghee, Chief of Party, said complaints from oil companies about Ghanaian SMEs inability to meet required standards on issues of Health, Safety and Environment and proposal writing among others necessitated the training.
