DCE Demands Immediate Termination Of Road Contract

The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Afigya-Kwabre, Mr Kwaku Oppong-Kyekyeku Kaakyire, has demanded the immediate termination of an 8.5 kilometre road project awarded to Care Construction Company Limited for non-performance. Upgrading works on the Fawoade-Adwumakaase-Aboabogya road was started by the contractors about 13 years ago but there is no sign that this would be completed anytime soon. He said this after inspecting the road with reporters of the Ghana News Agency (GNA), who were in the area under STAR-Ghanas sponsored media auditing and tracking of development projects. It is an initiative launched to put a spotlight on how the governments resources are helping to transform the lives of the people, particularly the rural population. The goal is to aid transparency, promote accountability and good local governance. Mr Oppong-Kyekyeku said there was no indication of either commitment or seriousness on the part of the contractors to carry out the work they bided for and subsequently won. He said the only option left now was for the awarding authority to act decisively to re-award it to different contractors who could be trusted to deliver on schedule. The Foreman of the company, Mr Kwadwo Yankyira, however, complained that lack of funding was to blame for the delay. He said the project was struggling not because the contractors were not eager to work but largely because the funds were not flowing. The DCE rejected the excuse and said every needed support had been given to the company and that it had become difficult to tell what their real problem was. Mr Oppong-Kyekyeku said the undue delay had become a major worry to people in the communities served by the road, adding, This is giving me sleepless nights. I share their frustrations. The communities include Ebom-Bomfa, Aduman, Adubinso, Swedru, Adwumakaase-kese, Fawoade, Aduamoa, Bampanase and Aboabogya.
