Zita Okaikoi's Husband Abandon's MP Dream

The former National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary candidate for Okaikoi North Constituency in the Greater Accra Region, Mr Andrew Okaikoi, has abandoned his dream of becoming a legislator, for the GAR chairman position of the ruling party. Credible information picked up by The Herald from the Tesano residence of Mr Okaikoi, suggests that the husband of former Information Minister, Zita Okaikoi and now Ghanas Ambassador to Czech Republic, has declared to join the hot race. Mr Okaikoi, who was the Chairman of the Ghana National Council on People with Disability and also a businessman is among the tall list of contestants, seeking to wrestle power from the incumbent regional chairman. Interestingly, businessman and failed aspirant for the Ghana Boxing Association (GBA) job, Mr Henry Manly-Spain, former Municipal Chief Executive of Ledzokuku Krowor Municipal Assembly (LEKMA), Daniel Nii Amartey Mensah, Mr Stephen Akwetey, former Krowor Constituency NDC Chairman, and Mr Jonathan Tackie-Commey, former Member of Parliament (MP) for Odododiodiooo Constituency, have all expressed interest in the position, which is occupied by Mr Joseph Ade Coker. The Herald has learnt that the decision to contest the position is reportedly causing Mr Ade -Coker and his campaign team sleepless nights. Sources have hinted that some newly elected Greater Accra Constituency Executives of the NDC, MPs, NDC stalwarts and certain influential figures at the presidency are pushing for Andrew Okaikoi to contest for the position. Andrews sacrifice in the region is unrivalled. He has shown great dedication to the partys course, even at a time he was badly treated during his campaign to become MP, one of the key figures pushing the agenda said. Andrew Okaikoi a native of Ga Mashie, James Town, with an ability to communicate in Krobo, Ada, Twi, Fante, Hausa and Ewe, as well as other local languages, is believed to be warming the hearts of key individuals at the Presidency. He is, therefore, considered by those urging him to contest for the position as versatile and a good communicator. Sources close to the former parliamentary aspirant, have confirmed the speculation, and suggested that Mr Okaikoi has succumbed to the pressure being brought on him to contest for the position. There is already an intensive campaign from the inner circle of the NDC to have Ade Coker remove as Regional Chairman. This campaign is being partly led by members of the Okaikoi Constituencies and Ablekuma Central, Member of Parliament (MP), Theophilus Tetteh-Chai, who wants Ade Coker out, including putting his position on the line. If the signals and feeling within the partys grassroots are anything to go by, Ade Coker seems to have an uphill task ahead At the heels of the discontent within the rank and file of the NDC, concerning the Greater Accra chairmanship position, is a growing school of thought that Ade Coker is losing popularity within the grassroots. The information says, he is losing grounds because of the series of allegations of corruption that have characterized his reign since 2009. The race for the Greater Accra regional chairmanship position, therefore, promises to be interesting.
