Naa Ashorkor Goes On Starr FM

It appears that no matter how confident one may be, the first day at a new endeavour has a way of putting one out of character. That is what happened to the bubbly TV host and movie actress, Naa Ashorkor Mensah, when she turned up on Monday to host her new mid-morning show, The Zone, on Starr FM a couple of weeks ago. I was a nervous wreck, she confessed to Showbiz last Tuesday. Ive been on television for many years and also hosted live programmes but as I waited to take my seat on that day, I was getting increasingly stressed. What made the situation even worse, she said, was that on that particular morning, the transmission kept tripping off and I was panicking and running up and down the studio like a crazy person. Naa Ashorkor said she would forever be grateful to her colleagues, Bola Ray, Kafui Dey, the IT team and the whole production crew who helped her overcome her initial anxieties and settle to a calm presentation for the five hours that the programme ran. Today, Naa Ashorkor has found her groove and there aint no stopping her now. Ive been growing since then, Im still learning and everyday gets better, she said. She has even learnt some other skill on the job as deejay. She revealed to Showbiz that she has been learning some skills on the turntables. What many people dont know is that, during the test transmissions, I used to DJ from 10 Oclock in the morning to 2 pm in the afternoon and now I sometimes deejay at my friends events when I have time. On the subject of what motivated her to get into radio, Naa Ashorkor said when she learnt that the former host of Drive Time on Joy FM, Bola Ray, had left to Starr FM, she intuitively knew that it would be an exciting experience to work with him at Starr. I have never done radio but I felt I should give it a shot so I called Bola Ray to congratulate him on his move and told him I would love to have a shot at radio. I initially wanted a show only on Saturday mornings just to test the waters but Bola Ray insisted I host the mid-morning show, she disclosed. According to Naa Ashorkor she initially felt Bola Ray and Starr FM were taking a huge gamble giving her so much responsibility even though she had absolutely no experience doing radio. I felt very challenged by it because the mid-morning is peak time and that is when everybody listens so for Starr FM to give me that slot meant they had a lot of trust and confidence in me so I felt challenged and I vowed to justify the trust they had placed in me. Naa Ashorkor, said although she has a lot of experience in front of the cameras thanks to her film and TV career, radio is a lot more difficult than she expected adding that there are a lot of calculations and behind the scenes activities that go on in order to give the listeners a pleasurable experience. She however added that she considers radio a full time career but she has no intention to quit her job at Accra based TV station, GH One or to quit her film career.
