Parliament Reconvenes Tomorrow

Parliament will be reconvening tomorrow (October 1) for a special or emergence sitting, and it is expected to rise on Friday, October 3. Information to that effect had been communicated to all the 275 members who are on recess. The Speaker of Parliament, Edward Doe Adjaho, who called for the special sitting, is summoning the MPs based on Standing Orders 38 of Parliament and Article 112 Clause 3 of the 1992 Constitution. Due to the current renovation works taking place in the House, the special sitting will take place at the Accra International Conference Centre. The renovation started last month after the second meeting of the second session of the Sixth Parliament had come to a close on July 18. It is being undertaken by China State Hualong Company Ltd. the same company undertaking the renovation of Job 600 State House, which is to serve as office accommodation for all MPs. When DAILY GUIDE visited parliament yesterday workers of the company were seen busily going about their duties to meet the deadline. The third meeting of the second session will commence on October 24, this year. The Deputy Director of Public Affairs Department of Parliament, Kate Addo, told the DAILY GUIDE that because of the emergency situation and the limited time involved, the contract was given to the same company working on the office accommodation. She said the company had assured that it would finish with the renovation works which involve reconfiguration of the chamber and other minor works, to give Ghanas parliament a new facelift by the close of October or at most, early November. The amount involved in the renovation could however, not be established by this paper.
