Police Hunt Hit-And-Run Driver

The police are hunting for the driver of an unregistered four-wheel vehicle that knocked down two pupils on the Awoshie- Pokuase dual carriage road last week in Accra. The driver reportedly drove away without stopping after knocking down two primary six pupils of the Macarthy DC School at about 5p.m. on September 23, 2014. While one of the two children identified as Gloria Arhin, 12, died instantly, the other, Priscilla Mensah, 12, is in a critical condition at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra after the vehicle ran over her legs. The children were said to have been using the zebra crossing, but the driver failed to stop when he was signalled by other drivers to stop for the children to cross. Father of deceased The father of the deceased, Mr Joseph Nana Arhin, told a delegation of police officials led by the Accra Regional Command that his daughter would be buried this week. He commended the police for sympathising with the bereaved family and appealed to them to ensure that the driver was brought to book. A third person also was said to have been knocked at the same spot by a different vehicle at about 8a.m. the day after the two children had been run over by the unidentified vehicle. The second driver stopped to help convey the woman, identified as Elinam Avorgah, to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital. Police disturbed The Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Mr Christian Yohuno, said the police administration was disturbed by the news. He described the wanted driver as a wicked driver and we will not stop until he is apprehended. He said the Inspector General of Police (IGP) had delegated police officers to team up with the Motor Traffic and Transport Department of the Ghana Police Service to investigate the incident and apprehend the suspect. The case has been taken from the Anyah Police and handed over to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), he said and appealed to the public to support the police with information that could lead to the arrest of the suspect. The Kaneshie Divisional Police Commander, Chief Superintendent of Police Mr Ernest Owusu, said police personnel would be stationed at the zebra crossing to monitor traffic movement and also ensure drivers did not drive beyond 50 kilometres per hour.
