Teacher Facing Defilement Granted Bail

John Essilfi, a teacher at the Woode Methodist Basic School in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis, who was arrested by the Police for allegedly impregnating one of his students, has been granted bail after several weeks in police custody. He was granted bail in the sum of a GH100,000 with three sureties to justify by the Takoradi Circuit B, presided over by Justice Charles Nimako, after five counsels joined the accuseds lawyer to the request for bail. They pleaded that he should be granted bail on the grounds that the case had been referred to the Attorney Generals Department for advice. The accused would, however, re-appear on November 11. Essilfi was arrested by officials of the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) at his residence at Cocoa Villa, a suburb of Takoradi about two months ago for allegedly defiling and impregnating 15-year-old Junior High second year student. Police sources said the teacher had unprotected sex with the student in the staff common room resulting in the pregnancy. Under the Section 97 (7) of the Criminal Procedure Code Amendment Act, defilement is ordinarily not a bailable offence.
