Educationist Calls For Parents' Involvement In Management Of Schools

An educationist has said there was the need to encourage active involvement of parents in the management of schools. Mr Stephen Donkor, the Director of Joy Standard School, said this could significantly help to enhance the quality of the nations education. He was speaking at the 17th speech and prize-giving day of the school held at Atonsu in Kumasi under the theme Promoting quality education, the role of stakeholders. He called for de-politicization of the education system to allow for some consistency, saying, the situation where the duration of the senior high school education kept shifting with every change of government was not the best. He said it was time the politicians stopped gambling and messing up with the future of the young people. Mr Donkor spoke of the tremendous contribution that the private schools were making to the development of education and suggested that they were given needed support by government. They could for example be included in Ghana Education Trust Fund (GET-Fund)-assisted projects to expand their infrastructure and the award of Ghana Cocoa Board scholarship to their students. Madam Betty Asare of the Kumasi Metropolitan Education Directorate, appealed to parents to make sure that their children were provided with the basic schools needs. She said parents sould not only put the kids in school but must be aided to stay focused in the classroom and appealed to operators of private schools to put premium on in-service training to upgrade the teaching skills of their teachers.
