Corruption Rise Shocks Catholic Bishop

The Catholic Bishop of Koforidua Diocese, Most Rev. Joseph Afrifah Agyekum has expressed shock about the upsurge of corruption and other social vices in the country. According to him, Christians would be held responsible for the rot and evil in the country if they do not play their expected roles to kill corruption in the country. He said Christians are expected to serve as agents of change wherever they find themselves, hence, finds it strange that a Christian populated nation like Ghana is engulfed with so many social vices such as bribery and corruption, promiscuity, robbery, indiscipline, murdering among others. Most Rev. Agyekum said this during a three-day pastoral visit to Adweso St. Dominic Catholic Parish which took him to Nyerede, okorase, Behinase, Tinkong, Asuoyaa, Mangoase, and Nyame Bekyere Catholic churches. He was accompanied by the Parish priest, Rev. Father Andrew Anum Quaye-Foli and some members of the parish. The visit was to acquaint himself with the activities of the parish members, discuss with them their problems and challenges, and plan for the way forward. He charged them to work hard to heal the pain in broken homes. According to the Bishop, Christ is a savior of mankind, man of peace and forgiving God which calls for his followers to live a reconciliatory and caring attitude to bring hope, peace and love to the society, especially, the marginalized. He charged the priest and other parishioners to devise new ways of getting closer to the laymen and unidentified members in the diocese by making the newly instituted evangelization mechanism in the Catholic Church dynamic and effective so as to bring hope to them and win more souls for Christ. Most Rev. Agyekum observed that the Catholic Church is rapidly losing most of its members to other churches because of limited branches. He was optimistic that new branches would soon be established closer to the people so that they will not travel long distances in search of Catholic Church to worship. He called on Christians to join the national campaign in keeping the environment clean and tidy to curb the upsurge of cholera cases in the country. He also urged all to heed to the numerous professional advice of health officials in other not to contract the Ebola disease. The Bishop later confirmed 10 young men and women into the church and entreated them to pray without ceasing, seeking Gods guidance in whatever they do, live upright lives and be of good behavior by living exemplary lives.
