Traders Angry At AMA

Scores of traders at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle have taken a swipe at the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) for what they described as inhuman treatment meted out to them. The AMA, through the Urban Roads at the Ghana Highways Authority (GHA,) last Saturday embarked on a demolition exercise at the Orion area of Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra. The authorities of AMA explained that the demolition exercise was to help pave way for the ongoing construction works at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle. But speaking to Today, the visibly worried traders lamented the failure of the city authorities to give them compensations they promised them earlier before the demolition. According to them, they were entitled to some form of compensations and wondered why that was not done before the exercise (demolition). We thought they would give us our compensation first, but look at what they have done to us, the traders quizzed. Though the traders admitted they were informed of the demolition date, they wanted the AMA to fulfill its part of the bargainwhich was to give the compensation due them. A trader name [withheld] said: the demolishing exercise has brought a big problem to my business and also has made me to lose my customers. However, some traders disclosed that they had received their compensation monies but were brooding over where they would settle for their business. A phone dealer at Orion cinema, Alex, said the president must know that the refurbishing of the Kwame Nkrumah Circle overpass will not entice the ordinary Ghanaian to vote for him again. For his part, a shoe cobbler, Mohammed, noted that the demolishing exercise would still continue to make life unbearable for them. This paper uncovered that the compensation money ranged between GH100 to GH250,000. That amount, according to the affected traders, was enough to do any kind of business. We have worked here all our lives and I know after the completion of the road some traders will come back here, second cloths seller, Mensah, asserted.
