UN Ebola Team Sends Relief Items Today

The United Nations Mission for Ebola Emergency Response (UNMEER) is to send its first batch of relief items to two of the three affected Ebola countries in West Africa today. A German Air Force C160 aircraft was yesterday loaded with UN humanitarian supplies and equipment for delivery to Sierra Leone and Guinea. The C160 aircraft will use the UN humanitarian air corridor to transport the items, which include high-energy biscuits for people affected by the disaster and equipment to set up the logistics chain for future aid delivery. The aircraft, which leaves and returns to Accra today, is expected to reload more supplies for the two affected countries tomorrow. According to the Head of Communications of the UNMEER, Mr Ari Gaitanis, the supplies and equipment and their delivery were part of the international community's response to the Ebola crisis. He said the equipment would be used to build warehouses where Ebola relief items would be stored. The German Ambassador to Ghana, Mr Ruediger John, commended the government of Ghana for making Accra the hub for Ebola relief supplies. He said the aircraft was part of the German governments support to the UNMEER. He said so far the German government had contributed 17 million euros in support through different international agencies for the Ebola affected countries. He called on the international community to continue with its support until Ebola was wiped out of the continent.
