About 50 houses, in and around Kasoa in the Central Region, are to be demolished to pave the way for the construction of a 24-kilometre Old barrier-Kokrobite-Tuba-Sapato road. The affected houses belong to encroachers, who have built along the stretch of the land earmarked for the project. The need for the demolition came up when the Parliamentary Select Committee on Roads and Transport inspected the progress of work on the GH�30 million project being undertaken by Joshob Construction Company.The visit by the Committee was part of a five-day monitoring and evaluation tour of road networks in the Central Region last Monday. Project The project, which was begun in June 2014, is being funded by the government and is expected to ease the constant traffic congestion in the Kasoa township. Known as the western by-pass, it will take off from the Winneba road at the Old barrier, through Bortianor, Aplaku, Kokrobite, Tuba and Nyanyano and connect back to the Winneba road at Sapato close to Budumburam. It includes the construction of a 20 metre span bridge across the Okrudu River at Nyanyano. It also involves the construction of pipe culverts, drains, pavement works and the provision of traffic lights at Tuba Nyanyano and Sapato-Winneba road junctions. The Greater Accra Regional Engineer for the Department of Urban Roads, Mr Jacib Nelson, said the Awutu Senya District Assembly was in discussions with the affected house owners to ensure a smooth exercise. The Chairman of the Committee and Member of Parliament for Bia, Mr Michael Coffie Boampong, said the committee was impressed by the rate of work on the project so far.
