The Tafo Pankrono Police in Kumasi have arrested two blacksmith apprentices for allegedly stealing large quantities of electrical cables belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
The culprits are Sani Mohammed, 20, and Sumaila Mussah, 17.
The ECG estimated the cables at GH�32,000.
The suspects were arrested at their workshop where they were melting the aluminium cables to mould cooking pots and head pans.
Their master, Zakariah Mohammed, who is the owner of the workshop in a house at Moshie Zongo, managed to escape on seeing the police approach.
Briefing the press, the Tafo Pankrono Divisional Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Charles Domaban, said on October 23, this year, following a tip-off that three blacksmiths at Moshie Zongo were melting aluminium cables belonging to the ECG, policemen were dispatched to arrest them.

According to him, when Mohammed saw the police, he took to his heels, leaving behind his two apprentices who were arrested by the police.
Chief Supt Domaban said a search at the workshop revealed that the suspects had stolen large quantities of the electrical cables, some of which had been cut into pieces to be melted for the moulding of cooking pans.
He said in their caution statements, the two apprentices allegedly told the police that a man named Kobby normally supplied their boss with the cables.
The police have since mounted a search for both Zakariah and the said Kobby.
Car snatching
In another development, the division has arrested three suspects for their involvement in the snatching of a car.
They are Evans Appiah, 26; Eric Adu, 25, and Andrews Wireko, also known as Chief.
