33 suspected commercial sex workers, as well as their 42 clients who were arrested by the Nungua police in Accra for allegedly engaging in prostitution, have been convicted by an Accra Magistrate Court.
The suspects were fined an amount of GH�120.00 each and are to sign a bond to be of good behaviour. The suspects were arrested in a swoop by the Nungua Divisional Police Command Tuesday night at a brothel.
The Greater Accra Public Relations Officer, ASP Afia Tenge who disclosed the court's decision to Adom News said sixty two of the convicts have paid the fine.
She said the remaining thirteen are in police custody until they meet the court's requirements for release. ASP Afia Tenge also debunked assertions the police infringed on the fundamental human rights of the suspects.
�Prostitution is against public morals so the police followed due process by taking the suspects to court� she explained.
Meanwhile, President of the Legal Advisory Foundation, Maurice Ampaw has commended the police for the swoop. He was however not happy about the paltry court fine since according to him, �most of the prostitutes earn GH�500 and GH� 1000 a night�.
�This fine is too small so it will not deter them from the act. Most of the clientele are judges, politicians and pastors who pay big� he alleged.
Maurice Ampaw said although world�s oldest profession cannot be banned, the police should keep on embarrassing them when arrested.
