DOCUMENTARY: The Plight of 60 Orphans...They Sleep In a Single Room

It is an undisputable fact that every person has a fundamental right to life but in reality, some lives are worse than living on earth. Though children are said to be every country's future leaders, some children are yet to discover their fate because its either unfortunate for them to have been born into this world or rather unfortunate for them to have turned victims of circumstances. Otoase, near Adoagyiri at Nsawam in the Eastern Region, is recently in the spotlight for reasons beyond imagination. Eye of Lord Orphanage at Otoase is a small house with a single story. The Orphanage houses over 60 children; all orphans and some victims of single parenting. Orphans Woeful Plight The children range between 3 years and 14 years, and have since been fighting for survival. The lives of these deprived children have been worsened by the terrible living conditions at the orphanage. The orphanage which is a brainchild of Samuel Kwapong Darko and wife Mary Kwayisibea, has just two rooms for all the children. The females sleep in a separate stuffy unventilated room while the males cram up in a different room. All the rooms lack proper ventilation, fans and mattresses. The kids contend with mosquitoes to find sleep in their dark rooms. Food Though the proprietor of the Orphanage, Samuel Darko, a blind man and graduate of the Akropong School for the Blind and his wife compassionately manage each day to feed all the children; they're very constrained by their inability to provide a three-square meal. The drama over breakfast is an eyesore that visitors will indeed find it difficult to behold the scene. The over 60 Children have to be fed in the morning but from the same basin used to bath them. They drink tea and each child receives a small fragment of a loaf of bread to complement their breakfast. Clothing These underprivileged children are bathed with a single sponge, all in one basin of water and single towel used to rinse their bodies. This act is feared to spread all kinds of diseases among them if not checked. They also depend on chopping sticks to keep their teeth neat; nonetheless, the young ones only entertain the sticks in their mouths without any hard teeth to chew off the head. Their source of water is a stream, one kilometer away from where the orphanage is located. They have inadequate clothes and the kids are not given the luxury of choice as to which cloth to wear. Due to the inadequacies, both small and big all have to fit into any cloth they lay their hands on. Education These children are very brilliant and their intelligence can be affirmed from their easy understanding of the lessons taught by their teachers as well as their outstanding writing and reading skills. Although the kids enjoy a certain level of education, they however have to gather themselves under a roofless makeshift classroom to study and in the nights, it's almost impossible to do their home works since they study in the dark. There is no electricity supply at this area. Aid The joy of these children at Eye of the Lord Orphanage will only be complete when they see a major improvement in their lives. They also want to enjoy proper and adequate basic amenities of life as food, clothing and shelter. Whether they will survive the test of time or not, it depends on the collective responsibilities of all concerned citizens, ready to come to their aid. Watch the documentary below:
