We Are Still On Strike; We Have Not Received Any Court Order - Workers Union

Spokesperson for the Workers' Union on strike, Mr. Reynolds Ofosu Tenkorang has maintained that the workers are still on strike despite a court order forcing them to go back to work in an ex-parte ruling. Accra High Court on Friday, October 31, granted an ex-parte application filed by government ordering public sector workers across the country to call off their strike and return to work immediately. The 12 workers unions- Ghana Medical Association, Registered Nurses Association, Ghana National Association of Teachers, Coalition of Concerned Teachers, Coalition of Local Government Staff Association of Ghana, etc- called the strike last week in protest against governments decision to choose a trustee to manage their tier two pension contributions. Responding to the High Court order on Oman FMs Morning Show, Mr. Ofosu Tenkorang insisted the workers union is still on strike because the striking unions have not been served by the court except that newspapers have published the court order. He emphasized that the court order does not take effect in the newspaper publications but rather should have been given to the second party involved in the law suit. So far as we know the strike is still ongoing...nothing is stopping us except that we have read in the newspapers that we should go back to work; but nobody has served us any court order. We were not summoned to court and there is no court order telling us to go back to work. The court process does not work like that, that we should be served in the newspapers; we dont take dictation from the newspapers, if the court gives us the order, then we will know the content of the order but for now we dont know anything about any court order, he hinted. He again reminded that the negotiation with the government on the tier two has not reached anywhere as government is still insisting on its earlier proposition to handle the tier two pension fund; adding any attempt to know the amount the tier two fund has accrued has proved futile. He bemoaned that government is yet to submit its proposal to the workers union as agreed last Friday to begin the negotiation process to know how the tier two will be managed. He revealed that the workers union has obeyed the negotiation process by submitting their proposal to government last Friday.
