Mr Agyabeng Mensah Abrampa, Brong-Ahafo Regional Manager of the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC), on Wednesday appealed to the media to intensify public education on wearing of seat belts to ensure safety.
He said with the onset of the harmattan, drivers ought to slow down and critically observed road signs and regulations to minimize road crashes.
Mr Abrampa was addressing journalists at a media briefing on activities designed by the commission to control road accidents in the region before, during and after the Christmas festivities.
He said despite all efforts being made by the commission and other stakeholders, road accidents continued to rise in the region, and appealed to the media to allocate part of their air time for road safety education.
Mr Agyabeng said the commission was now focusing on the need to engage the attention of passengers and pedestrians on road traffic regulations, to empower them to speak up and be in control of their journeys.
He said though the region was yet to design detailed activities for the Christmas campaign, it would organize road safety week and the public transport day this month to create public awareness on road traffic regulations.
Superintendent Oppong Asirifi, Brong-Ahafo Regional Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department, said road safety was a shared responsibility and required commitment from the general public.
He said for the past two months, the police had made GHC12,000 from spot fines and now that the regional office of the NRSC had provided it with speed raider gun and the police intended to extend its activities to many of the communities in the region.
Superintendent Asirifi said the department had deployed visibility personnel at strategic areas in the municipality to control crime, and maintain law and order.
