Mahama Upset With �China Chairs� In Parliament

A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) communications team, Samuel George Nettey says the president is upset with Parliament�s decision to import furniture from China. According to him, the action by the Parliamentary Service Board is in contravention of President John Mahama�s directive to patronage Made in Ghana Goods. The leadership of Parliament has come under intense criticism for importing sub- standard furniture for Parliamentarians. Most of the MPs have complained bitterly about the quality of the chairs insisting that it is not values for money. Local furniture manufacturers in the country have also argued that the decision to import the furniture when they can do a better job is an �insult� to them. Speaking on Asempa FM�s Ekosii Sen programme Friday, Sam George expressed disappointment in the ill-informed decision by Parliament to import the furniture. In his view, the refurbishment of Parliament was an opportunity for the local furniture makers to showcase their unique traditional techniques of the industry. The presidential staffer indicated that the essence of the Made in Ghana campaign to vigorously promote the domestic goods have been defeated. He bemoaned the penchant of imported goods which can easily be produced in Ghana.
