Row Over GH1,700 Bail

The Assembly man for Kpong Electoral area and a police officer have fleeced a security capo of GH1,700.00 on the grounds that they would secure a bail for two of the companys workers who have been remanded into police custody at the Akuse prisons for assault by the Odumasi Krobo Court. The two suspects, Amewuga Dagadu, in his early forties, and Ali Teye Olagah, 45, are security guards stationed at the Kpong Volta River Authority (VRA) branch of the Eastern region. Shortly after they were placed behind bars to reappear at a later date, the Assemblyman for the Kpong VRA electoral area who gave his name as Raymond demanded GH1,700.00 to secure bail for the suspects. He claimed that he knew the prosecutor in charge of the case who could assist him. When the prosecutor, ASP Yeboah was contacted, he justified that the court needed the money to enable them grant the suspects bail. Yes, after series of meetings we agreed on the sum to grant them bail as we progress further in the case. Speaking to the DAILY HERITAGE in an interview, the Security Operations Manager of the company, Enoch Afotey Mensah, confirmed knowledge of the incident. Giving an account to what placed Dagadu and Olagah in the grips of the police, Mr. Mensah said on October 22, 2014, he received a distress call from one of them indicating that they have been attacked by a group of well-built-men. On that fateful night, the suspects spotted two men trying to break into a container at a site containing batteries, hydraulic oil and engine oil belonging to the VRA. One of our men confronted them, but, realizing they were community folks he was familiar with, he indicated to them that he will report the case to the police. The two suspected men and 28 others stormed the premises of the VRA with cutlasses and attacked the guards inflicting wounds on them, he added. Mr. Mensah recounted that when Dagadu and Olagah sensed danger after the site was invaded by the marauding group, they jumped into the river to save their lives. The CID officer at the Kpong Police Station, Zack, confirmed the incident to the paper, but, added that though he was at the scene, he was powerless due to the number of macho men there. The operations manager wondered why the court charged the two security guards for causing unlawful harm when they sought refuge in a nearby stream.
