Ex-Convict Jailed Five Years Over Phone Snatching

A 20-year old ex-convict was on Wednesday sentenced to five years imprisonment by an Accra Circuit Court for robbing an IT specialist of his mobile phone at Awudome in Accra. Felix Awuah, a drivers mate, charged with robbery pleaded guilty. The court presided over by Mr Francis Obiri convicted him on his own plea and sentenced Awuah accordingly. Earlier, the court was going to sentence Awuah to two years imprisonment but when the court demanded from the Police whether he was a first offender, the police informed the court that he was an ex-convict. According to the Police, he committed a similar offence, was jailed and on his return from jail he has committed the same offence. Prosecuting Inspector Grace Bandoh, told the court that the complainant Derrick Honger, is a resident of Mataheko and owns a Samsung Galaxy S4 mobile phone. Awuah is a resident of Toubodom near the Kwame Nkrumah Circle Accra. On November 15, this year, at about 8:30 pm the complainant was on board a Mazda taxi cab with registration number GW8964-14 from Kokomlemle to Mataheko. On reaching a spot at Awudome cemetery, Awuah pounced on Mr Honger who was seated at the front seat and snatched his mobile phone valued at GH 1,500 cedis. Prosecution said a Police officer who was driving behind the taxi saw the accused hence parked his car and chased Awuah who was apprehended. With the help of the complainant and other witnesses, Awuah was escorted to Kaneshie Police station where a report was made. Prosecution said Awuah admitted the offence in his caution statement.
