ABANTU For Development Condemns MP

ABANTU for development has condemned the suggestion made in parliament by Mr Nelson Abudu Baani, MP for Daboya-Mankarigu, that adulterous women should be stoned to death. Mr Nelson Abudu Baani made the suggestion in his contribution to the debate on the Intestate Succession Bill last Thursday. A statement issued by the NGO said that even though adultery was punishable in some countries by severe penalties like flogging and death by stoning or hanging, Ghana cannot be associated with such draconian laws. The group said they are "deeply shocked and disappointed" about the MP's contribution. The statement said the group believed the suggestion was out of place in 21st century democratic Ghana since Ghana had committed herself to international and regional conventions which demand women empowerment and gender equality. The group also congratulated all members of parliament who openly support policies and laws on womens human rights and expressed optimism that democratically-minded people in Ghana would continue to work against discriminatory practices while protecting womens rights and social justice. ABANTU for development is an NGO in special consultative status with the Economic and Social Council of the UN established by African women based in Europe.
