3 Illegal Miners Killed

The bodies of three illegal miners have been retrieved from a collapsed pit at Gbane in the Talensi District in the Upper East Region. The three, who are yet to be identified, were said to be prospecting for gold when the pit collapsed last Wednesday. Seven more persons are still believed to be trapped while rescue operations are currently underway by security personnel of Shaanxi Mining Ghana Limited to retrieve the bodies . The Public Relations Officer of Shaanxi Mining Ghana Limited, Mr Maxwell Wuma, who spoke to the Daily Graphic, said Shaanxi had given out its excavator and pay loader for the rescue operations. He said pungent smell was emanating from the collapsed pit while the operation was an indication that some of the bodies were decomposing. As of the time of filing this report yesterday afternoon, the Upper East Regional Police Commander and the Deputy Upper East Regional Minister were on their way to Gbane.
