The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) is to assist build household toilets in excess of 2,000 over the next five years, Mr Solomon Asiedu, the Metropolitan Coordinating Director, has announced.
He said this would be done in partnership with an NGO, Water and Sanitation for Urban Poor (WSUP).
It is projected that about 100,000 people would directly benefit from the intervention.
Mr. Asiedu said the present situation where about 55 per cent of the population has lavatories in the homes with 40 percent sharing public facilities and the remaining five per cent practicing open defecation need to improve.
He was speaking at a ceremony held at the Konadu Yiadom School Park to mark this year�s World Toilet Day.
He spoke of plans to build the capacity of public toilet operators in the metropolis to keep those places clean.
He called on people to maintain safe and healthy environmental sanitation practices - avoid littering and dumping garbage into drains and unauthorized points.
