Project Coordinator, International Cocoa Initiative (ICI) has appealed to journalists to focus efforts on protecting the rights of children by putting the spotlight on issues affecting their welfare and growth.
Mr. Prince Gyamfi said they should go to every length to assist bring down the incidence of child labour and abuse.
He said they could do this more effectively by collaborating with organizations engaged in child protection activities.
He was speaking at a day�s workshop organized by the ICI for journalists in the Sefwi-Akontonbra and Sefwi-Wiawso Districts.
The goal was to elicit their support in the campaign to free children from any form of labour that is hazardous and could put them in harm�s way.
It was also to help them to have better understanding of the ICI�s intervention on child labour and protection and the elimination of worse forms of labour in cocoa growing communities.
Mr. Gyamfi said the ICI was working to improve the lives of children in cocoa farming areas through the promotion of child-centred community development and responsible supply chain management in the cocoa sector.
His organization, he said, would continue to safeguard child rights and contribute to the elimination of child labour through innovative strategies to assure the children of a secured future.
Mr Gyamfi said they had no problem with kids helping their parents at home but what they found completely unacceptable was asking them to do any work harmful to their health, education and proper development.
