NHIS Collapsing Ksi Hospitals

A major health crisis is looming in the Ashanti Region with hospitals in Kumasi running short of drug supplies as a result of indebtedness to the regional medical stores, Dr Kwasi Yeboah Awudzi, Kumasi Metro Director of Health Services, has said. According to him, health facilities in the city have resorted to private pharmacists for supply of essential medications on credit, but they are also refusing to continuously give to the distressed facilities because of the huge debts pilling up. At a press briefing in Kumasi, Dr Awudzi told journalists on Monday that the health facilities could not buy the needed logistics and medicines required by patients because the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) had delayed in reimbursing them for services rendered. NHIAs Indebtedness The Metro Health Director disclosed, This year, the NHIA has paid facilities up to either February or March, except the regional hospital which has received payment up to May.
