Soli Is An Age-Old Journalistic Problem - Wereko-Brobby

A former Chief Executive Officer of the Volta River Authority (VRA), Dr. Charles Wereko-Brobby has stated that journalists taking monies popularly known as soli after covering an event is an age old problem . According to him, as soon as a person finds himself in the profession, he or she is compelled to take money from the organizers as an avenue to make ends meet. His comments come days after intense debate in the country over the impact of soli on the work of journalists. Soli is a term used to describe monies that are given to journalists after covering events, ostensibly to cater for their transportation. Though there have been some concerns from people in the country as a bad practice. Recently, founding President of IMANI Ghana, Franklin Cudjoe and financial analyst Sydney Casely-Hayford had alleged that Mr. Adom-Otchere received cash popularly called 'soli' in appreciation for hosting the president on Thursday, November 21. But the journalist is baffled that the two gentlemen, whom he says are his 'friends', will make such inopportune comments about his interview with President Mahama. Though Mr. Adom-Otchere denied allegations on Adom FMs Dwaso Nsem Monday that he took money from the president before conducting the interview with him, adding that communication to interview the president was sent to the Presidency eight months ago but he only got a reply to undertake it last week. But Mr. Wereko- Brobby noted that the problem is not about the individual but the problem has to do with the profession because some people see it as a means to make ends meet and so I find it very difficult to understand why a journalist will work for a media house without getting paid. And so in order to get the problem out of the country, then I think the bad nuts must get out of the profession he added.
