The Major Cause Of Death In Our Prisons Is The Food - Rev. Benjilo Discloses

Reverend George Adu Bonsu popularly known as Benjilo, who was convicted and sentenced to 10 years imprisonment has revealed that the major cause of death in Ghanaians prisons is food. According to him, the prison menu has only two foods: gari or banku with soup, and the stench coming from these dishes is so bad that he never ate during his stay behind bars. ..some prisoners had cats but the cats would not eat the food served to the prisoners. That is how bad it is. The prison cooks use their feet to mix the dough before cooking because of the large numbers they cook for and that is why people die in their numbers. As for the soup, the least said about it the better. It is so light that after serving the Prisoners take it in quickly else the ingredients would separate from the water and it smells a lot. Some prisoners develop boils which result in their death, Benjilo said on Okay Fms Ade Akye Abia Program. He made these disclosure on the back of the death of Sima Ibrahim, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of EXOPA Modeling Agency, who was serving a fifteen year jail term for drug trafficking. Sima died on December 5, 2014 after suffering an injury following a football game while serving a jail term at the Nsawam Prisons in the Eastern region. The family has accused the Police Hospital of negligence when the Prisons Service rushed Sima there for treatment. However, officials of the Police Hospital have denied any wrongdoing. The death of the popular model has ignited debate on the conditions in the nations detention centers and prisons, but Benjilo is of the opinion that though the government has a lot to do in this regard, the change must begin from the food served to the Prisoners.
