New Board For GIS

A new nine-member Board of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has been inaugurated in Accra with call on members to work hard to overcome the problems facing the Service. Speaking at the inauguration yesterday, the Deputy Minister of Interior, James Agalga, charged the new Board to team up with management to surmount the problems affecting GIS. He mentioned insufficient budgetary allocation, lack of uniforms, jungle boots and vehicles to facilitate their work as some of the major challenges. The Deputy Minister said only 10 percent of the staff had been accommodated by the Service. He noted that none of the regional commands (offices) was owed by the Service, adding that the development was hampering the operations of the GIS. Mr. Agalga disclosed that the Service had secured $32 million to put up a new eight storey office complex to serve as headquarters of the service. He urged all the stakeholders to offer their support to the Board to enable it carry out its mandate effectively. Board Members The Board members are Cletus Avoka, Member of Parliament (MP) for Zebilla constituency (Chairman), COP/Dr. Peter Wiredu, Director of Immigration, Alexander Grant Ntrakwa, Director of Passport, Dr. Ahmed Adulai Jinapor, lecturer, University of Education, Winneba, Nana Essilfuah Boison, Head of Marketing, Barclays Bank, John Owusu Amankrah, Consultant, Robert Orraca Tetteh, IT Consultant, Mustapha Ahmed and Adelaide Anno-kumi. Board Function The board members per Section 3 of the GIS ACT (PNDCL 226, 1989) are expected to ensure the effective implementation of the laws and regulations pertaining to immigration and related issues, among others.
