Drivers Urged To Be Cautious

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Birim Central, Mr Kwabena Nkansah-Asare, has called on the various transport unions to continually educate their members on road safety regulations so that they may desist from negative practices on the road such as speeding, overloading and drink-driving, which lead to accidents. He also urged drivers to take a rest whenever they felt tired and not capitalise on the availability of passengers during festive occasions to drive hastily and dangerously. Mr Nkansah-Asare made the call at a road safety education campaign jointly organised by the Oda Divisional Police Command and the Ghana Private Road Transport Unions (GPRTU) for drivers at Akyem Oda and surrounding towns. The MCE urged the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) to make sure that only vehicles which were roadworthy were issued with road worthiness certificates and that only qualified drivers were issued with appropriate licences. He said when this was done, the savage and excessive killing on the countrys roads would be averted. He commended the Ghana Police Service for the good work they were doing with regard to ensuring safety on the road and enforcement of road regulations. He said the police must intensify their checks on overloaded vehicles and speeding and also check the roadworthiness of vehicles and drink-driving. He further urged the police to fully enforce the road safety regulations and make sure that those found culpable were brought to book to serve as a deterrent to others who may want to follow in the same path. The Oda Divisional Police Commander, Chief Superintendent James Sarfo-Peprah, urged drivers to expose dealers in Indian hemp and cocaine and suspected armed robbers to the police for their arrest and prosecution. The Oda Divisional Commander of the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), District Superintendent of Police (DSP) Magnus Sam, encouraged drivers to strictly observe road signs and traffic regulations in order to minimise road accidents. He further urged them to maintain their vehicles regularly and refrain from the use of narcotic drugs. Other speakers at the function included Mr Kwesi Yirenkyi, the Eastern Regional Manager of the Road Safety Commission, and Nana Asare Gyapong, the First Regional Trustee of the GPRTU.
