Reduce Fares, Young Democrats Appeal

A Popular pressure group in Tarkwa, The Young Democrats (TYD), has made a passionate appeal to drivers in the country to reduce transport fares. They directed their appeal, particularly, to the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and other notable stakeholders in the transport industry to intervene and have the transport fares brought down, following the recent 10% reduction in fuel prices by the National Petroleum Authority (NPA). In a press release issued and signed by Ibrahim Diallo and James Justice Quaicoe, President and Secretary respectively of the group, they urged drivers to act in the interest of the country. "Thank God our cry yielded some results. We expect that the effect would be felt in the pockets of the ordinary citizens immediately after the downward review, as it has always been the norm for any upward price review. "We were told earlier by the transport operators (GPRTU of TUC) that they would meet to decide on the way forward after the Christmas break. The Christmas festivities are over but we are yet to see any action that would translate into reduction of transport fares to ease the burden on the ordinary Ghanaian, whose cry alluded to the reduction. "We have been told time and over by GPRTU and the likes that the prices of petrol and diesel is a major contributor in the review of their transport fares, why would a reduction of a whopping 10% not have an effect on transport fares immediately? Why would these transport operators want to make selfish gains at the expense of the ordinary Ghanaian? The group said it was carefully monitoring the situation and would adopt another line of action if the transport operators fail to heed positively to their call.
