Ghana To Set Up A New Landfill Site At Ashalaja

For decades, Ghana has been faced with the challenge of getting proper sites to store waste. As a nation, we have had limited access to an engineered landfill site allows final disposal of solid waste in a secure manner by minimizing the impacts on the environment. However, through the support of the Dutch government, Ghana, would soon have an engineered landfill site set up in the in the Ga West District specifically Hobor, which is a surburb in Ashalaja. The asset is 500 acre land and would serve as a final disposal site. In an interview with Hon. Emmanuel Kwadwo Agyekum, a deputy minister for Local Government and Rural Development, he noted that looking at the current sanitary situation in Accra, there was an urgent need to set up a place to serve as a final disposal site of waste. He reiterated governments partnership with the Royal Netherland Embassy to rectify the problem. Aside the setting up the engineered landfill site, there would also be about three transfer stations in Accra where waste materials would be compressed before they would be wheeled to the final destination point.
