The newly elected Chairman of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) Kofi Portuphy has promised to use his office to achieve his long term dream of effecting positive change in the lives of Ghanaians. Responding to a challenge thrown him by the Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church, Most Rev. Professor Emmanuel Asante, at a thanksgiving ceremony at the West Legon Methodist Church in Accra on Sunday, Mr. Portuphy said he was closer to his dream of affecting the citizenry. Professor Asante in congratulating the NADMO boss said political leadership should be seen as an opportunity to serve the electorate instead of lording over them, a trend he said was inimical to national development. He challenged Mr. Portuphy to contribute to a peaceful Ghana as leader of the NDC in the 2016 presidential and parliamentary elections, and bemoaned the tensions that have characterised Ghana�s elections. �I humbly pledge before the Bishop and all of you here that I am a servant of this country and I will serve all political parties and I will endeavour that the peace that we are enjoying in this country, I lead the NDC to sustain the peace before, during and after the 2016 elections,� Mr. Portuphy vowed to a rapturous applause from the congregants. According to him, his dreams and aspirations will come to not if the relevant stakeholders in his chairmanship don�t give him the necessary support while directing his ways when he went wrong. �What I require of the church and the Bishop is a continuous prayer that will strengthen me, a continuous counseling from the church and the support from my party for this to be achieved.� He said the NDC under his leadership will execute an issue based campaign that will bring ideas to the table for national development. In his view, the country was faced with numerous challenges that could only be solved with the collaboration of other stakeholders and with his experience; all will be brought on board for that common goal. In his sermon on the theme �the Baptism of Christ�, Rt. Rev. Titus Awotwi Pratt challenged the political class to be guided by the spirit of God for a prosperous Ghana. He said if the affairs of men were directed by God, the world would be a better place to live adding �the baptism of tolerance and the baptism of responsible leadership is what this country needs�. The infrastructural base of the country he noted, would have been better if projects started by previous governments were continued and completed for the common good of the country. Some members of the NDC who graced the ceremony included Speaker of Parliament Mr. Doe Ajaho, E.T. Mensah, Dr. Ekow Spio Garbrah, Kofi Adams, Lee Ocran, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, Harry Zakour, Victor Smith, Dzifa Gomashie, among others. Proceedings at the ceremony were however interrupted when General Secretary of the NDC Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketia stormed the ceremony grounds half-way into the programme. �Tell him we have insecticide here so if he starts it, I will just unleash some congregants to spray him,� Rev. Awotwi joked in reference to Mr. Asiedu Nketiah�s �General Mosquito� tag.
