Care For Disabled Children - Parents Urged

Parents of children with disability have been advised to be actively involved in the rehabilitation of their children. According to the Samuel Wellington Botwey (SWEB) Foundation, a locally based non-governmental organisation(NGO) that is committed to the rehabilitation of children with disability, since parents father or mother or both are closer to their children, their involvement in the rehabilitation process of their children was necessary to achieve positive results. The foundation is partnering Enablement, a Netherlands-based research institute providing technical support to the organisation, and Liliane Fonds, which is providing funds to support the NGO to conduct research to establish the level of the involvement of parents in the care of their disabled children. Six-month study The six-month study, involving 12 parents each at Osu in the Accra Metropolis in the Greater Accra Region and Manso Atwere in the Amansie West District in Ashanti Region, is being conducted from December, 2014 to May 2015. A release signed and issued by the Executive Director of SWEB, Mr David N. Botwey, copied to the Daily Graphic in Kumasi, said the outcome of the research would serve as the basis for the formation of Parent Support Groups (PSG) with parents jointly working towards improving the lives of their children. It said in acknowledging the welfare of their children, parents would need to share the concerns and needs of their disabled children. As a collective responsibility of the public in managing disability, the release said it was the dream of SWEB that parents would come together to make demands to support the needs of their disabled children. It, however, appealed to policy makers to take a second look at the existing policies on child protection and how they could be sustained.
