Togo Starts Revision Of Electoral Roll

Togo is engaged in hectic preparations for the countrys presidential elections due in March 2015 with the first phase of the revision of its electoral roll starting today. Togos Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced in a press statement in Lome over the weekend that the revision of the electoral roll would occur in three phases from January 20 to February 23, 2015. The first phase will consider the Maritime region where the Togolese capital is located. Togo last held a revision of its electoral roll before democratic legislative elections in October 2013. But the current voters exercise is expected to target young voters who have just attained the voting age of 18 and above. According to Togos INEC, the revision exercise would enable the commission to eliminate names of deceased voters from the electoral roll and register new voters. Presidential candidates are expected to file their nomination papers 45 days before the elections that will obviously come off in March 2015. It will be recalled that the electoral roll has been a source of disputes in the recent past as opposition parties claimed it was full of what they described as ghost names. During a meeting held last week, some members of Togos radical opposition political parties serving on the INEC expressed some reservations about the current procedure.
