The New Free Press calls into question the comments by Kobina Bentum Quantson, a former Head of the Bureau of National Investigations and Professor Kweku Danso Boafo, a former High Commissioner to the United Kingdom that recent protests against Ghana’s president were tarnishing the image of Ghana.
The New Free Press believes that peaceful protests and demonstrations is part of our credentials as a democratic country and also part of democratic development. The New Free Press remembers not long ago members of the current government going on demonstrations in Ghana and abroad .The Current President John Mahama wore red shirts and dabbled himself in red paint and held placards calling for government of the day to step down. The current General Secretary of the ruling party Mr Johnson Aseidu Nketia and Alban Bagbin joined demonstrations outside the US embassy. May we know from Mr Bentum Quantson where he was then? is Professor Danso Boafo who demonstrated with the late Professor Mills outside the parliament house now saying he was wrong?
The New Free Press asks how can Ghanaians will not demonstrate if 51 million Ghana cedis is given to Alfed Agbesi Woyome fraudulently and President is happy with it? How can Ghanaians be happy when the President has failed to solve the energy crisis which is destroying thousands of jobs? How can Ghanaians all over the world keep quiet when our people are dying in hospitals with no access to healthcare because the National Health insurance is not working?
It is time our so called academics and experts use their experience to give advice to our leaders to solve problems and improve the lives of our people instead of trying to re-introduce a culture of silence to stifle criticism and debate.
