The enthusiasm and vigour which imbued members of the National Democratic Party (NDP) in the Western Region in their quest for political power in 2012 is virtually dead, The New Crusading GUIDE can confirm.
The apathy among members of the party in the region, this paper gathered, stems from the conspicious silence of the national executive body and the party’s founder, Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings, since the end of the 2012 general elections.
Some party members who spoke to The New Crusading GUIDE on condition of anonymity said there had not been any direction from the national body on the way forward for the party since the end of the 2012 elections.
They said whilst other political parties were busily organizing themselves from the grass-root to the national level to face the 2016 elections, the NDP was sitting aloof and had no plan to implement in future.
They blamed Mrs. Rawlings for doing very little to keep the party on its feet, stating that, no money had been injected into party over the last two years.
The condition of the party in the region, they claim, had been on a continuous deterioration as the party currently lacks a single office to carryout its meetings following its ejection from its regional office late last year.
“What even pains some of us a lot is that, in the midst of all these, there is no information or direction as to what the party intends doing. Not even a word of encouragement from national. Indeed, I must say that some of us regret joining this party”, one of the members told this paper.
When contacted, the Acting Western Regional Secretary of the NDP, Mr. Michael Ohene Asamoah, expressed similar concern about the situation, addind, that, he had been bombarded with phone calls on daily basis from party members complaining about the inactiveness of the party but he had no explanations to give them.
According to him, he had on countless occasions inquired from his national office as to what the party intend doing but got no meaningful feedback.
He said late last year, himself together with some party members planned meeting Mrs. Rawlings in Accra to discuss the future of the party but she impressed upon them to suspend their visit, promising that she woul get back to them soon.
Since then, he said, Mrs. Rawlings had not been able to get in touch with them despite several text messages sent to her as a reminder on the intended meeting.
“The situation is very bad. Some of our members who can’t stand it are already defecting to other parties and there is nothing I can do about it”, he said.
He said the earlier the founder of the party stepped in and gave direction to the party, the better.
Meanwhile, some political watchers believe Mrs. Rawlings might be finding her way back into the National Democratic Congress (NDC) following the recent call by her husband, J.J. Rawlings, for the party to invite her back into its fold.
The Rawlings family is considered as very experienced and tactical politicians, therefore, some political watchers believe, Mr. Rawlings could not have made such a call without the consent of his wife.
Mrs. Rawlings, however, subsequently denied returning to the NDC but her denial is yet to convince political watchers.
