Before the NDC went to congress to elect the current leadership of the party, we run a story headlined, NDC AGAIN! STATE SPONSORING PARTY? In the story we recalled how the formation of the NDC was done at the expense of the State.
In fact, in the contest for chairmanship of the NDC, all the aspirants apart from Mr Dan Abodakpi were still holding onto one State Sponsored Position or the other. Mr Hudu Yahaya, is still the Board Chairman of GRIDCO, Dr Kwabena Adjei is the Board Chairman of GETFUND, while Mr Kofi Portuphy heads NADMO.
For fair play and avoidance of abuse of State resources even if the laws of country don’t deal directly with such situations we expected these men to be gentlemen and decent enough to say ‘we let go’. After all, the English say “To let go is gentlemanly.”
The elections are over and Mr Portuphy is still holding on to the power that he should have a shelved long before his contesting of the position of chairmanship. And what is even annoying is the senseless rationalisation by some members of the NDC citing examples that show how low people can sink in their desperation to justify or legitimize wrong doing.
That the NPP did it. That there is no law that clearly stipulate so. That he was vice Chairman of the NDC at the time of his appointment and nobody cried foul so why now? That the position of Chairman is part-time so he can handle both. Not only are these excuses infantile, in fact, they show the negative and backward thinking of their originators.
In essence, we are told that the NDC is not striving towards excellence and best practice. If the NPP did it, does that make it right? It is even not true that this scenario occurred under the NPP. The other point the NDC must realise is that majority of those calling for the resignation or dismissal of the NADMO boss today didn’t know he was vice chairman. And even if they knew and didn’t raise an objection then does not preclude them from doing that so now.
Mr Portuphy and his cohorts must know that they have a duty to help John Mahama succeed. Holding on to the NADMO position while serving the partisan interest of Chairmanship of the NDC is not in any way helping their leader.
Mr Portuphy must act wisely and save this nation from any further unnecessary engagement on this clear case of conflict of interest and abuse of political office. You can be better than that. We know you better than this.
