Tema Residents Dumps Solid Waste Into Sewer Lines - MCE

Residents of Tema have been cautioned against dumping solid materials into their sewer lines.

Residents especially those in communities four, two and seven have been complaining about the chocking of their sewer lines which sometimes leads to spillage of faecal matter into their homes.

Mr Isaac Ashai Odamtten, Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive, gave the caution on Wednesday during a working tour of Tema by Mr Joseph Nii Laryea Afotey-Agbo, Greater Accra Regional Minister.

Mr Odamtten said dumping of solid waste into the sewer lines have become alarming and leading to the chocking of the lines.

He stated for instant that "three skip container loads of solid waste were collected from sewer lines in Community two last year"

He added that "the people are dumping solid waste into the system and that cannot continue".
The MCE therefore called for behavioural change and intensive education on the issue.

He stated that even though the Assembly was yet to fully solve the sewer line problems in the harbour city, they have improved the maintenance regime.

Mr Odamtten said a master plan towards changing of the old smaller sewer lines to bigger ones as the old ones could no longer contain the increase in water.

He indicated that some residents have built on the sewer lines and therefore called on them to help the Assembly tackle the sewer line replacement.

Mr Afotey -Agbo urged the staff not to show their party colours in the discharge of their work.
He said every civil servant was supposed to help implement policies formulated by the government in power no matter their political affiliations.

He questioned why some civil servants resort to sabotaging governments, stressing that "evil thoughts and diabolic behaviour will not help this country".

The Greater Accra Regional Minister also urged Assembly members to engage in dialogue with the assembly to get the needed development to their areas.

He said they should desist from holding the assembly to ransom by refusing to sign the needed documents unless their wishes were fulfilled.
