The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) says it cannot be blamed for the current power outages, popularly referred to as ‘dumsor, dumsor’, in the country.
At a media briefing in Cape Coast , the General Manager of the ECG in charge of the Central Region, Mr A.A. Abebrese, said the company did not generate electricity but only distributed what was supplied to it by the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo).
He, therefore, appealed to members of the public to refrain from unjustifiably taking the law into their own hands and vandalising the offices and operational areas of the company.
Mr Abebrese hinted that properties of the ECG in some parts of the country had been vandalised by aggrieved members of the public over issues bordering on electricity supply.
He pointed out that what the public tended to forget was that the ECG was a limited company which desired to make profit, just like any other company, and wondered what would prevent the company from selling more power to make more profit.
He said in the midst of the ‘dumsor’, the company had put in place massive infrastructure installations to serve its customers satisfactorily.
Outlining the gains made in that regard, Mr Abebrese announced that the ECG was upgrading its “Town One” feeder to enhance power distribution.
He said the company was also installing injecting transformers in all its nine operational districts, particularly Kasoa.
It had also constructed a modern primary substation at Elmina to enhance supply reliability in the town and its environs, he said.
Additionally, he said, it had constructed new district offices and customer service centres at Elmina, Saltpond, Winneba, Assin Manso and Twifo Praso.
Mr Abebrese used the occasion to appeal to the public to refrain from setting fires close to wooden poles, a practice which resulted in outages when the poles got burnt.
