Odike Proffers Solution To Power Crisis: Scrap PURC

Kwesi Addae Odike, the former flag-bearer of the United Front Party (UFP) has preferred solutions to the country's seemingly unending energy crisis.

Speaking to Kwame Nkrumah Tikesie on Okay FM , the UFP man was of the view that giving the nature of the energy situation and the urgency with which it has to be tackled, it would be better for the Mahama led government to adopt the models that were used to introduce competition in the telecommunications industry.

"..years back, we were buying SIM cards at outrageous prices but what do we see now? They are so cheap that I can even be in my cocoa farm, very far out of town and make calls to all parts of the World”.

“This was done through the introduction of competition in the sector and through that prices came down while services improved,” Odike recounted.

The former UFP flag-bearer also called for the scraping of the body mandated to oversee the affairs of the utility service providers because investor would not want prices to be fixed for them after investing huge sums of money in the energy sector.

“We must completely scrap the PURC because no investor would want somebody to determine selling prices for them,” he added.

His comments come at a time when the nation is going through it worst energy crisis of all time which has ignited a debate on how to resolve this challenge.

It also comes after the State owned Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) announced that the ongoing power rationing exercise would intensify.
