Police Council Explains Promotions

The Ghana Police Council has waded into the controversy generated by the recent promotions in the Ghana Police Service explaining that such elevations are spelt in Regulation 37 of C.I. 76 (Police Service Regulations, 2012).

Promotions are determined by promotions examination, seniority and length of years served and subject to satisfactory performance assessment of good conduct.

The Council pointed out in a statement that, on the other hand, recommendations based on meritorious acts of bravery or valour in the prevention of crime or outstanding performance of duty could be basis for elevations.

Continuing, the statement stated that “the effective dates of promotions in all such cases are determined; in the case Junior Officers by the Inspector- General of Police and for Senior Police Officers by the Police Council” adding, “It is in light of the above that the Police Administration has organised promotion courses and examinations across the country for junior ranks.

Senior Officers over the past year have also been to the Ghana Police Service Command and Staff College (GPCSC) at Winneba to build their capacity and prepare them adequately to for higher command positions.”

While filling current vacancies in the Service is determined by the present strength of the Service on a pyramidal structure the statement stressed that “care is taken not to overstaff a particular rank level in order not to create distortions in the system.”

Presently, a number of officers of the ASP rank are due to undertake a Junior Command Course on February 7, 2015 at GPCSC the Council announced as it assured all officers and the general public that due diligence has always been employed throughout the selection process, and this will continue to be the case.
