Sir John Should Concentrate On Helping NPP Come Back To Power Instead Of Attacking Me - Maurice Ampaw

A Private Legal Practitioner, Maurice Ampaw has slammed the former General Secretary of the opposition NPP, Sir John on his comment that he (Maurice) is trivializing rape case with consent forms.

Following the Ace broadcaster, KKD’s rape case, Lawyer Maurice Ampaw suggested it would be better if guys make the ladies fill Consent Forms before beginning the actual sex act as this will serve as evidence if the lady later presses charges of rape against her partner.

Base on the opinion of Lawyer Maurice Ampaw, Sir John who doubles as a lawyer with 31 years of practice stated the position of his colleague learned person was wrong as the lady can change her mind in the course of the sexual intercourse, thereby making any attempt to continue with the act amount to rape.

….rape case is so dangerous that we don’t have to trivialize it with consent forms; if she says stop what use is the consent form? Men have to exercise patience and women have to understand before sex….rape case is like a murder case,” he advised.

It is against this backdrop that Lawyer Maurice Ampaw on Okay Fm’s Ade Akye Abia Morning Show on Friday February 13, 2015 brimmed with anger saying Sir John should concentrate on his political career by helping his party (NPP) win power in 2016 elections.

He maintained that if Sir John is a good lawyer, he should have helped his party to win the 2012 election petition at the Supreme Court; emphasizing that Sir John is 80 percent more Politician than a practicing lawyer.

Tell him to concentrate on his political career and he should help his party (NPP) into power and not attack me…..if you disagree with me just say so but don’t say that I’m trivializing the rape law; it is not fair…I respect him a lot but he shouldn’t say I’m misleading the public….I’m expressing my legal opinion”, he fumed.

But responding to Maurice Ampaw on the same platform, Sir John insisted the position of the private legal practitioner on rape case with consent form is wrong as the consent form cannot be used to defend anybody in a criminal case.

To him, consent form will only be applicable in civil case but even with that, it will be effective after the partners have signed the form in court to make it legal binding; stressing that the consent form is not in the Constitution of Ghana which can be used as an evidence in a criminal case.

We are not saying he doesn’t know the law but we are saying he got this one wrong with the law of rape; he should humbly admit he is wrong. I don’t know how Maurice Ampaw understands the law of rape and it doesn’t mean I’m insulting him if I say he is trivializing the law with a consent form”, he stated.
