State Housing Gets New Board

State Housing Corporation has inaugurated new board of directors.

The inaugural ceremony which took place yesterday in Accra at the premises of the Ministry of Works and Housing was witnessed by the sector Minister, Alhaji Collins Dauda, and some dignitaries.

The newly inducted board will be chaired by Ebenezer Kobina Fosu.

The members of the board include Mr. Seth Stephen Fiati, Mr. Kojo Owusu Agyemang, Alhaji Hameed Yahaya Yakubu, Mr. Kwame Anno-Kumi, Mr. Emmanuel Jack Animi and Mr. Michael Prince Asante Akuffo.

According to the water resources, works and housing minister, “the State Housing Company was established to provide houses in the then Gold Coast through development and building management.”

He recounted that the corporation in 1965 was converted under the Companies Code to a Limited Liability Company, to operate as a fully-fledged commercial enterprise.

Mr. Dauda noted that the vision of the State Housing Company was to provide high quality homes in thriving communities where people had a sense of pride and place.

He revealed that the company’s mission was to serve the housing needs of all income groups through conventional and financial channels by developing over 1,000 homes annually.

And that mission, the minister indicated, summarises the task that the new board has been tasked to undertake, noting that increasing population growth and rapid urbanisation have made housing a major challenge in the country.

He disclosed that the current housing deficit was estimated to be in excess of 1.7 million units and growing by the day.

The minister also tasked the new board to consider getting into partnership with some companies, which have access to credit, to be able to leverage the needed funds for innovative building systems.

The new board chairman, on his part, indicated that the board was aware of all challenges and that they would help to address the housing deficit as well as the area of harvesting rainwater.
