Muslims In Western Region Go On Demonstration

The Muslim community in the Western Region led by its Iman will today [Friday] embark on a demonstration to protest what they call human right abuses of Muslims in the country.

They say they are being discriminated against in schools, at work and other public places.

Speaking to Citi News, one of the organizers of the demonstration, Mohammed Kamiru Balla said they “have had enough of the human rights abuses,” hence their decision. Balla said some Muslim brothers in second cycle institutions are forced to attend church service , a situation he described as unacceptable.

“We have a right to practice our religion once our brothers and sisters are in school, they should be allowed,” he stated. According to Balla, Muslims should be allowed to also gather together and not be forced  to practice any other religion.

The missionary schools especially have over the years, insisted on having every student, regardless of the religion, attend church service on Sundays at the boarding schools. Most of these schools nonetheless, also have mosques that allow the Muslim students to worship.

Worrying Muslim, Christian clashes

In another development, Police in the Brong Ahafo Region have identified some of the ring leaders including a Chief Imam who allegedly instigated clashes between some Muslims and members of the Seventh Day Adventist(SDA) Church in Atebubu.

The two groups clashed over a disputed piece of land, during which the SDA mission house and three other houses were burnt down.

The Brong Ahafo regional Police PRO, ASP Christopher Tawiah said his outfit is seeking directive from the courts on a possible arrest.

“We will liaise with the court of law and they will be summoned to appear before the court to answer the charges proffered against them.”

He also gave the assurance that the Police will ensure that justice is served.
