The Central Regional Minister, Aquinas Tawiah Quansah, has tasked internal auditors at the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to be more proactive by checking financial mismanagement.
He explained that internal auditors are expected to assist in identifying and preventing it from occuring
Mr Quansah said this in a speech read on his behalf at the opening of a two-day capacity training programme on the International Professional Practices Framework (IPPF), at Cape Coast on Thursday.
The 50 participants made up of principal internal auditors and assistant internal auditors from all the 20 MMDAs in the region, would discuss issues concerning standards and ethics regarding internal audit practice in the country.
Participants are expected to follow closely the code of ethics governing their practice and also to ensure that they adopt the standards governing their practice at the end of the meeting.
Mr Quansah said that in a country where the challenge of limited resources was an issue, it behoved on internal auditors to find means of adding value to the governance structure through their advisory role.
He, therefore, called on internal auditors at the assemblies to provide guidance in terms of financial administration through their oversight responsibility.
He further, urged them to assert themselves in their duties as well as the limitations that comes with their duties.
The Regional Minister also urged internal auditors to maintain seriousness and integrity in the discharge of their duties.
A managing consultant with Altum Training and Consulting, Fred Pokoo-Aikins, who was the facilitator for the programme, noted that the role of internal auditors was crucial in financial administration.
He said internal auditors make recommendations for management to implement such recommendations by accepting the weaknesses that would be pointed out by the internal auditor.
